In a
fisheye photo, a kite flies high over a forest of Alluaudia procera
trees in Berenty Reserve. These tall, almost unbranched trees are members
of the "spiny forest" ecosystem of southern Madagascar (see the
next page), and are unique to the island, with spines and small leaves arranged
in parallel tracts spiraling up the trunk.
