The "spiny
forest" of southern Madagascar resembles no other forest on Earth.
Desert conditions prevail in most of this region, which falls in the extreme
rain shadow of the eastern mountain chain. The forests have the highest percentage
of plant endemism in Madagascar. Trees, like the ones above, have succulent
and reduced leaves and enlarged, succulent trunks, which conserve water.
