Fire and Ice

Flames from burning lava break through the crust of a lava lake on the Island of Hawaii in the top of this mosaic image. Below, icebergs and pack ice extend as far as the eye can see off the coast of Antarctica. In both places a solid crust has congealed on the surface of a liquid.
